Group F winners Portugal take on Slovenia in the last 16 of Euro 2024 at the Deutsche Bank Park arena in Frankfurt on Monday night. Roberto Martinez’s men secured progression to this stage after just two group games with wins over the Czech Republic and Turkey. That meant they could make wholesale changes for their final group game against minnows Georgia. However, despite the likes of Cristiano Ronaldo and Joao Felix in the starting team, Georgia took the points. That won’t have hurt them too much and key players were given a rest, which could prove crucial here.

Slovenia are somewhat fortunate to find themselves in the knockouts. They reached this competition stage as one of the top performing third-placed teams, despite getting fewer points than Ukraine, who were sent packing. They drew all three of their group games, which is ironically what Portugal did when they won the Euros in 2016. The last of those was a hard-fought 0-0 draw with England, and they did have chances to win it, so they will likely employ the same counter-attacking tactics as they take on another European football superpower.
