Austria and Turkey lock horns at the Red Bull Arena in Leipzig on Tuesday night in the final game of Euro 2024’s round of 16. The Austrians have punched above their weight so far in the competition, finishing top of Group D, which included France and the Netherlands. After starting out with a 2-0 loss to France, it looked like it was going to be an uphill task for Austria to get out of the group, but an impressive 3-1 win over Poland the next time out rejuvenated the side and they ended with an entertaining 3-2 win over the Netherlands.

Turkey would have expected to qualify for the knockouts when they saw the draw for Group F, and that’s exactly how it transpired. An entertaining 3-1 win in their opener against Georgia set them up perfectly, but a 3-0 loss to Portugal next time out set them back a little. That brought it down to their final group game against Czech Republic, which they won 2-1 to finish second and progress to this stage of the competition. They’ve shown plenty of attacking prowess so far in the tournament and it will be interesting to see how they approach this game.

The bookmakers have Austria as the favourites for this one and that’s probably fair, given their impressive performance last time out. Turkey won’t just roll over, however, and with five goals in three games so far, we’re leaning towards an Austria win with both teams scoring in the game. Austria’s 3-2 win over the Netherlands was arguably the best game of the competition so far and we’re expecting goals here, so we’re going for a repeat of that scoreline. Christoph Baumgartner has netted six goals in eight games in Austria, so he’s worth backing to score anytime.
