Romania vs Netherlands

Romania take on the Netherlands at the Allianz Arena in Munich in the last 16 of Euro 2024 on Tuesday. The Romanians topped the eventful and dramatic Group E courtesy of goals scored in that phase of the tournament, having netted four times in three group games. It began with a comprehensive 3-0 win over Ukraine before they were brought back down to Earth with a 2-0 loss to Belgium. Their fate was in their own hands in the final round of games, but in the end, a 1-1 draw with Slovakia was enough for them to secure the top spot.

The Netherlands will consider themselves incredibly fortunate to have reached the knockouts. They were drawn into Group D along with France, Austria and Poland, which many dubbed the ‘Group of Death’. They got off to the perfect start with a 2-1 win over Poland and were unlucky to only come away with a 0-0 draw against France. They could have topped the group with a win over Austria, but they fell to a 3-2 defeat in one of the best games of the tournament so far. They’re on the more favourable side of the draw, so they will fancy their chances of progression.

The bookies have the Netherlands as the odds on favourites to win, but we think it will be a tight encounter. That’s why we’re opting instead for the Netherlands to win and both teams to score. Both sides aren’t shy of attacking and are vulnerable at the back, but we don’t expect plenty of goals and are siding with the 1-1 correct score. Cody Gakpo and Razvan Marin are each on two tournament goals, so it could be worth backing each of them to score as singles in the game and doubling them up, too.
