Spain vs Georgia

Spain begin their Euro 2024 knockout campaign with a clash against Georgia at the RheinEnergieStadion in Cologne on Sunday night. Spain cruised through the competition’s group stages, winning all three of their games. They scored five goals and were the only side in the tournament to go through the entire group stages without conceding a single goal. Those displays have seen their outright odds shrink, and they are now many people’s favourites to win it. There’s not much that can be said to the contrary either, having already seen off Italy and Croatia with relative ease so far.

There’s always one surprise package at major tournaments, and Georgia is it this time around. They put up a spirited display against Turkey in their opening game but eventually fell to a 3-1 defeat before drawing 1-1 with the Czech Republic in a game they could, and probably should, have won. It all came down to their final group game against Portugal, who had already qualified for the knockouts and made several changes to their lineup. Georgia was fantastic as a man from start to finish, and even with Cristiano Ronaldo, Portugal didn’t have an answer and the game ended 2-0 to set up this tie.

Georgia has done amazingly well to get to this stage, and they deserve it. They have the chance to make history here, but that looks incredibly unlikely against the most impressive team we’ve seen so far in the tournament. The bookies agree and have Spain at long odds to win within 90 minutes. Georgia has shown they’re dangerous, and so we’re leaning towards a Spain win and both teams scoring.
